Marketing and design are most effective when working as a system. Marketing creates demand, while design transforms that demand into a clear enough experience for viewers to take action.
One Goal, Two Different Roles
Marketing answers the question “why should users care.” Design answers the question “how to make them understand and believe.” If these two parts are misaligned, the campaign often loses its rhythm very quickly.
- Marketing positions the message and the target audience.
- Design organizes content, images, and actions.
- CTAs must align with the promise of the content.
A good campaign doesn’t need to say much. It just needs to say the right things and present them clearly enough for users to believe.
Companies all share a common desire, which is to find customers and increase profit margins for their products. Many studies have shown the relationship between purchasing behavior and sales content, indicating that colors in product design influence 60-80% of purchasing decisions, and 93% of posts on fan pages that receive many likes are due to impressive images and videos.
1. Marketing + Design: Like a Tiger with Wings
In reality, design is a subset of marketing. In an advertising campaign, if the marketer is primarily responsible for the content, the designer is the one who materializes that content into graphic products to provide customers with clear and unique views of the product. Therefore, designers also need to have knowledge of marketing, and marketers must understand brand design thinking.

Marketing and Design is a resonant relationship, a perfect pair to create the success of a communication campaign. The more harmoniously designers and marketers work together, the more successful the communication campaign will be.
2. To Connect Marketing and Design
According to my research, we will have 4 steps to help marketers and designers work effectively together.

Brainstorming Ideas
The marketing and design departments need to work together on a complete plan for how an idea will be developed until execution. There needs to be harmony between both sides so that you know whether both departments are clear about their ultimate goals. It is not always guaranteed that what the marketer wants to convey will be immediately understood by the designer. During brainstorming sessions, it will provide them with a clear idea by addressing any doubts.
Communication
Communication at every step is key to preventing your company from significant losses. Marketers are good with words and numbers, so they need to provide examples of what they expect in the design. A designer is someone who excels in visuals. Therefore, communication will be a crucial factor. Propose examples of design styles that you want for the final outcome. Designers need to do some research before attending any meetings so they can understand the discussions happening in the room and ask questions if they don’t understand something. This way, you will save time for both parties.
Creating Balance
When organizing meetings with clients, ensure that designers are included so that all departments better understand the clients' needs. The balance between the design and marketing teams will ease difficulties and ensure results as well as ROI(*) for your company.
(*) ROI stands for Return on Investment – ROI is the ratio of net profit to total investment costs. ROI is very useful for your business goals when referring to something specific and measurable.
Agree on Deadlines and Revisions
When setting deadlines for a specific project, consider the approximate number of revisions and achievable deadlines. If you have a deadline for the campaign, ensure that the set deadline is not too close to the campaign deadline, as sometimes designs may require revisions. Try to anticipate each other's needs and set deadlines by agreement.
3. Conclusion
Thus, Marketing and Design are always interconnected and accompany each other. When Marketing and Design harmoniously combine, they can create breakthroughs in communication activities.
Hopefully, this article will help you understand more about the relationship between Marketing and Design.
